What Are Your Rights As An Uber Passenger

Ridesharing is a cost-effective and convenient way to get around, and it has totally revolutionized the transportation industry. Uber has given over five billion rides, which is a pretty staggering number considering how young the company is. But because the platform is so new, a few hiccups and hazards are inevitable, so it’s a good idea to give yourself a rundown of your rights as a passenger before you call your next ride.

You’re entitled to a safe ride.

No matter where you’re going, you have a right to get there in one piece. Your driver should follow speed limits and obey the law during your whole trip, and they should be focused on the road. To be eligible to drive for Uber, your driver must be at least 21 and have been driving for at least three years with a clean driving record, so you won’t end up with a young and reckless driver who doesn’t know how to drive. Plus, your uber driver will have gone through a third party background check for any dangerous criminal offenses, so it’s unlikely you’ll end up behind the wheel with someone dangerous.

Your driver must have insurance.

Uber drivers must meet state requirements for auto insurance, so in the event of an accident, your driver will have coverage. Uber also offers an optional secondary policy to their drivers to make sure they’re covered completely.

Your driver must respect your personal space.

Any type of sexual behavior from your driver is unacceptable. The Uber rider safety policy forbids drivers from touching or flirting with passengers, and sexual conduct is also completely forbidden. Drivers are discouraged from commenting on their passengers’ appearance or relationship status. If your Uber driver says or does anything to make you feel uncomfortable, report them.

Your driver’s vehicle can’t be too old.

A safe and clean vehicle is one of your rights as a ruder. To be eligible for passenger transport under Uber’s requirements, the driver’s vehicle must be ten years old or newer. Uber will even lease cars to drivers who don’t own a vehicle, so don’t get into an unsafe-looking vehicle. Also, a car that doesn’t look like the vehicle is shown in the app may be an imposter. Double check the license plate and vehicle information provided by the app.

All passengers must have a seatbelt.

All passengers must wear a seatbelt while driving, so if your vehicle arrives and there aren’t enough seatbelts for your group, you absolutely should refuse the ride. It’s not worth risking your life.

You have the right to report unsafe drivers.

Perhaps your most important right is your right to report an accident or unsafe behavior that occurred during your ride. You can report your experiences directly to Uber, or, depending on the severity of the incident, to the police. If you process your complaint through Uber, your case will be handled by Uber’s customer service team.
